Hardin County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an armed suspect in Summitt Friday (01/17).
The incident happened just after 9:30 p.m. at Tabbs Hollow Road and Summitt Road.
The suspect was allegedly armed with a live grenade.
Deputies successfully secured the scene and attempted to negotiate with the suspect. Observations indicated the suspect was under the influence of narcotics and exhibited mental health issues.
Following unsuccessful attempts to persuade the suspect to accept mental health support, the suspect became irate. Deputies approached the suspect and utilized less lethal force to preserve human life.
The device, later confirmed to be a smoke grenade, detonated after the suspect’s apprehension.
The suspect received medical attention from Hardin County EMS and was transported to Baptist Health Hardin, where he was cleared and subsequently lodged in the Hardin County Jail.
Daniel Bennett, 55, of Ohio faces numerous felony and misdemeanor charges in Hardin County. He is being held under a $50,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on January 21.
